Peter Mehalaris 82, of Ocean, passed away Monday February 22, 2010.
Born in Newark to the late William and Helen, he resided there until moving to Ocean in 1997.
Mr. Mehalaris attended Rutgers University, Kean College and Seton Hall University where he received his Master's Degree. He taught for 34 years in the Newark School System and became the Department Chair Person at Broadway Junior High for 20 years retiring in 1991. He was also employed by the United States Postal Service in the Registry Department at the main branch in Newark retiring 1988.
He served in the United States Army in Germany during World War 2. He was a member of the 3rd Army track team and tried out for the Junior World Olympics in Berlin. He played violin with the Jewish Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Mark Silver. Mr. Mehalaris is survived by his wife Antoinette (nee DelGaizo), sons William Mehalaris and Carl Ascoli, daughter Ann Kramkowski, sister Amelia "Molly" Maralokas, grandchildren Leah, Emma, Matthew Kramkowski, John, Anthony, Nina Ascoli, Salvatore Mehalaris, and nieces Laura Maralokas and Elaine Edelson.
